Listservs on the Healthcare Communities Portal

Most communities on the Healthcare Communities Portal have at least one Listserv to allow members to communicate. When you join a community on the Healthcare Communities Portal you will automatically be added to the main community Listserv. When added to a Listserv yu will receive a Welcome which will provide the Listserv’s email address and directions on who to unsubscribe from the Listserv.

Sending a Message to a Listserv

To post to a Listserv, you can either reply to a question that came across the listserv or to start a new topic, send a new e-mail to [ListservName] (with [ListservName] being the listserv you want to send to). Within the related community on the Portal you will find a section that provides a list of Listserv names as well as a link to the Healthcare Communities Listserv Portal (



If at any time you wish to leave a Listserv in which you are subscribed, select the unsubscribe link found in any Listserv email.

Please note that unsubscribing might not remove you from the Listserv immediately but will take effect within a few hours.

Removing yourself from the Listserv will not remove you from the associated Community on the Healthcare Communities Portal. If you want to be removed from all of your Healthcare Communities memberships, or if you wish to close your user account entirely, please open a Help Desk request by selecting the Help tab from the top of any page on the site.


Listserv archives are available for every list. No matter when you join a list, you have access to all messages ever posted. You can access archived posts by selecting the Archive link found in any email sent to the Listserv. Browsing or searching archives can be useful to discover valuable resources and ideas that have been posted over time.


Listserv Management

You can access the Listserv Management home page by selecting the following link,


From the Listserv Portal homepage, select the Login link in the upper right corner of the page.

The first time that you log in to the Listserv site you will be asked to register a password.

Select the ‘Register Password’ link. A login page displays.

Enter your email address and password. The email address should be the one you use to login to the Healthcare website.  The password does not have to be the same password you use for the website.

Select the ‘Register Password’ button.

An email is sent to the email address you used when registering your password. The email contains a link that allows you to confirm your request.

After you have confirmed your request you will be able to login to the site.

Once logged in you will find Subscriber Options listed on the left side of the screen

Subscription Options

From the dropdown list of Subscriber Options select Subscriptions

On this page you can select the report format and lines per page that you would like to be your default view of the Listservs in which you belong.

On the Subscriptions page a list of all Listservs in which you are subscribed displays.

Mail Style is one option that you can customize. Check the box next to the Listserv you wish to customize. The default Mail Style is Regular. You can select another style from the dropdown list.

  1. A) Regular:This is the default. When a message is sent to the list, you receive it.
    B) Digests: Digests are a good compromise between receiving everything as it is posted, which can clog your mailbox, and receiving one email with a listing of everything posted to the Listserv in a 24-hour period. You will receive a digest once per day at 7:00 am ET, which will contain all the messages that came through the Listserv from the previous day.

Three Types of Digests

  • Digest (Traditional) – text only format
  • Digest (MIME format) – a MIME format with mail clients that understand MIME digest
  • Digest (HTML format) – requires an HTML mail client*

*Since you are likely currently using an HTML compatible email program (e.g. Outlook), the Subscription type, Digest (HTML format), is probably your best option when you feel your inbox is getting crowded.


  1. C) Index: With an “index” subscription, you receive short “index” messages at regular intervals, once per day at 7:00 am ET. These “indexes” show you what is being discussed on the Listserv, without including the text of the individual postings. For each posting, the date, the author’s name and email address, the subject of the message, and the number of lines are listed. You can then download messages of interest from the server. The index contains instructions on how to do that. Again, since most modern email programs are HTML-compatible, the last option, Index (HTML Format), is your best option.


Mail Status is another option that can be customized. The default mail status is Mail. If you are out of the office for an extended period of time, an option is to temporarily disable mail. Remember that you can always view the archives of all past messages.

If changes are made to subscription options, select the Update button to save your changes.
